Record the travel symptom accurately

A drawer that catches near the front, stops halfway or closes unevenly presents different observations. State where the problem occurs and whether it began suddenly or developed gradually. Photograph the cabinet and drawer front together, then any safely visible hardware markings. Do not repeatedly force a jammed drawer to prove the fault. Include whether the drawer contains ordinary household items or has recently been used differently. The purpose of that history is to guide an appraisal, not to assume that either the user or the runner caused the problem.

Identify the runner system before ordering

Runner systems differ in layout and adjustment features. Blum’s TANDEM documentation provides system-specific assembly and adjustment information; it is not a generic guide for every drawer. Ask the assessor to record the installed brand or component markings and identify the appropriate reference. A runner’s apparent length alone does not establish compatibility. Where the existing model is unknown, the written estimate should explain what needs to be inspected before a part is ordered. The owner should not have to purchase a speculative replacement pair merely to discover that the fittings differ.

Assess the drawer box and cabinet separately

Ask for findings on the runner, drawer box, cabinet attachment areas and any relevant connection hardware. A replacement runner does not necessarily address damaged material where it mounts. Conversely, a sound drawer box should not be discarded just because an operating component is worn. Have the assessor distinguish the observed fault from additional possible faults that remain unconfirmed. This becomes especially important where a remote estimate labels every sticking drawer as damaged runners. A short on-site assessment can produce a more defensible scope than an automatic full replacement package.

Make dimensions and part choices reviewable

The contractor should state required dimensions in a consistent unit and identify where they were taken. A sketch or annotated photograph is preferable to an unexplained list of numbers. The quotation should name the proposed part and identify what existing hardware remains. If a different system is proposed, ask what modifications to the drawer or cabinet will be needed and whether those changes are included. The owner can then compare a compatible component repair with a conversion rather than treating both as equivalent because both use the phrase new runners.

Include fronts, finish and usable storage

Drawer repair affects more than movement if a conversion changes the box, front position or available internal space. Ask the estimator to describe any change in usable storage or visible alignment. If new holes or marks will be exposed, request a finishing allowance or a clear statement of the expected appearance. In a fitted Toronto kitchen, replacing one drawer front can create a noticeable mismatch. Preserve a retention option where feasible and ask why the existing front cannot be reused before approving a visually different replacement.

Check the agreed use after repair

The completion demonstration should address the original travel issue and the correct operation of the installed system under its intended use. Ask for any manufacturer limits or instructions relevant to the replacement parts. Do not accept a universal weight claim copied from unrelated hardware. The final record should identify parts, modifications and any cabinet condition that remains outside scope. If the drawer is part of freestanding furniture, its overall stability is a separate question from whether the drawer runs smoothly and should not be implied to have been certified by the repair.

Compare scope rather than a single total

An enquiry should identify the room, number of affected drawers and Toronto postal area. Ask for assessment, parts, cabinet repair and finish work to be separated. If matching parts require a second visit, make that allowance visible. Keep the old part identity or photographs with the invoice, even if the contractor disposes of unusable hardware. AI can assist with missing measurements or conflicting part descriptions in the paperwork. It cannot verify a runner’s condition or the strength of the cabinet material; those findings belong to the person who examines and completes the work.

Where several drawers share the same appearance, number the affected locations on an overview photograph. Record whether the runner identity was checked for each group rather than inferred across the whole cabinet. This is particularly useful after piecemeal kitchen repairs, when visually matching fronts may conceal different components and preparation behind them.

Questions for the provider

  1. Where in the drawer travel does resistance occur?
  2. Is the runner model and mounting arrangement confirmed?
  3. Does the proposed repair retain the box and front?
